5 Backyard Tennis Drills You Can Run With Zero Equipment (Almost)
You don't need a court to start building real tennis skills. Here are five drills you can run in a backyard, driveway, or even a living room, using little more than a racket and a ball!
1. Balance
Have your child balance a ball on the racket strings and walk across the yard without dropping it. Simple, but it builds the hand-eye coordination and racket control that everything else depends on.
2. Bounce-Hit Count
Standing still, have your child bounce the ball on the ground, then hit it up with the racket, over and over, counting how many they can do in a row. This teaches soft hands and racket-face control ‚ foundational for every stroke that comes later.
3. Wall Rally
Any flat wall works. Have your child hit the ball against the wall and try to keep a rally going, counting consecutive hits. This is one of the single best solo drills in tennis, at any age.
4. Target Toss
Set up a bucket, hula hoop, or chalk circle a short distance away. Have your child try to bounce or throw the ball into the target, then progress to hitting it in with the racket. This builds aim and control in a game-like format kids enjoy.
5. Freeze Frame
Toss the ball gently to your child and call "freeze" right as they're about to hit. Check their form: racket back, eyes on the ball, good stance ‚ then let them continue. It's a playful way to build proper habits without lecturing about technique.
Why these work
None of these require a court, a net, or any tennis background from you. They build the fundamentals: hand-eye coordination, racket control, focus‚ which makes everything after this stage easier.
